The Graduate Management Admission Test – or GMAT for short – provides graduate business schools with an equitable assessment of an applicant’s analytical ability, aptitude, and reasoning skills. The GMAT is a computer-adaptive test (CAT), which matches a test-taker’s performance level during the exam depending on the number of questions answered correctly. If a candidate continues to answer questions correctly, the GMAT will automatically boost the level of difficulty for each subsequent question. More importantly, test-takers will receive an unofficial copy of their scores before leaving the testing center.

Why Take The GMAT?

Over 6,000 graduate business and management programs worldwide have used the GMAT for more than 60 years to help make challenging admission decisions. The curricula at top-tier business schools are rigorous, so MBA-candidates need to possess superior academic skills to thrive. In theory, an applicant’s GMAT scores prove his or her readiness for the challenging workload present in MBA programs. So an outstanding GMAT score correlates with high performance during the first year of business school.

What is on the GMAT?

The GMAT lasts approximately three and a half hours with four distinct sections: Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative, and Verbal. Consisting of 91 questions, the GMAT’s four sections include:

R

Analytical Writing Assessment

(30 minutes, 1 essay), which measures an MBA-candidate’s ability to think critically and effectively communicate ideas.
R

Integrated Reasoning

(30 minutes, 12 questions), which judges a test-taker’s ability to analyze data and evaluate information presented in multiple formats. These questions cover table analysis, two-part analysis, multi-source reasoning, and graphic interpretation.
R

Quantitative Reasoning

(62 minutes, 31 questions), which calculates the ability to analyze data and draw conclusions using reasoning and logic skills. These questions cover data sufficiency and problem-solving.
R

Verbal Reasoning

(65 minutes, 36 questions), which ranks an MBA-applicant’s ability to evaluate arguments and correct written material using standard grammatical rules. Test-takers will confront questions focusing on unseen passages, sentence correction, and critical reasoning.

Unlike other standardized tests, such as the ACT, SAT, or GRE, Beverly Hills test-takers will not receive a penalty for any incorrect answers on the GMAT. However, the GMAT does not permit test-takers to skip questions; in other words, MBA-applicants must answer every question to complete the exam. Test-takers must also recognize that the GMAT only measures verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills developed over time rather than specific content from undergraduate study.
