Is the SAT exam necessary?

The SAT, along with the ACT, is one of the two standardized tests that most colleges require as part of their application. While many high school students in Los Angeles spend four years and countless hours putting together what they hope is the perfect high school transcript, some struggle with the SAT’s structure, length, or strategies. With anywhere from as little as 5 to 10 hours of preparation, an Ivy Prep student can begin to see 10 to 50 point improvements in their scores which will dramatically impact the strength of their college application.

What will be covered in the SAT exam?

The SAT consists of four sections which make up two separate scores and takes about three to four hours to complete. The Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score is determined by the Reading section and the Writing section, while the Math score is determined by a Math section with a calculator, as well as a Math section without a calculator. Each of the two scores range from 200 to 800, with 800 being a perfect score. The perfect score of 1600 is determined by two combining two perfect 800 scores. There is an optional essay section (which Ivy Prep always recommends).

The SAT is designed to test a student’s inherent aptitude and abilities, but it is not without its flaws. For example, the SAT Exam doesn’t have any measure for how well a student works in groups, how they will perform in college, or how creative they are. One thing is for certain though- the SAT is teachable. High School juniors and seniors willing to invest the time for study score on average 200+ points higher. SAT preparation helps navigate the difficult topics found within the exam, such as radians and nonlinear functions in the math section or logical flow questions in the reading section. Here at Ivy Prep, we teach critical strategies including pacing and eliminating answers when unsure of the correct answer. Most importantly, good SAT preparation increases the student’s confidence allowing them to achieve the day of the test.
