What is a Good GMAT Score?
A “good” GMAT score depends on the program or school on a student’s list. Depending on the MBA program, a good GMAT score may range anywhere from the high 500s to the mid-to-high 700s. Elite MBA programs such as Harvard, Chicago, or Wharton, require applicants to score above 720. GMAT scores range between 200 and 800 points, with scores increasing in increments of 10. While test-takers will receive scaled scores for each of the four sections, the GMAT Total Score is calculated based on the Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning sections.
How Many Times Can Students Retake the GMAT?
There is no denying that a top-ranking GMAT score is one of the most important parts of a candidate’s MBA application. However, a lower GMAT score will not automatically disqualify a student from a program. For students who feel they did not meet their GMAT expectations, they can sign up to retake the GMAT. Students may retake the exam up to five times in a 12-month period, but only once every 16 days. Furthermore, students who scored a perfect score of 800 aren’t permitted to retake the GMAT for at least five years.
How is the GMAT Structured?
The GMAT lasts approximately three and a half hours with four distinct sections: Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative, and Verbal. Consisting of 91 questions, the GMAT’s four sections include:
Integrated Reasoning
Test-takers will have 30 minutes to complete 12 questions. The questions in this section will measure a test-taker’s ability to analyze data and understand the information presented in multiple formats. These questions will cover table analysis, two-part analysis, multi-source reasoning, and graphic interpretation.
Quantitative Reasoning
Test-takers will have 62 minutes to complete a set of 31 questions. This section will test students on their ability to analyze data and draw conclusions using reasoning and logic skills. These questions will also cover data sufficiency and problem-solving.
Verbal Reasoning
(65 minutes, 36 questions), which ranks an MBA-applicant’s ability to evaluate arguments and correct written material using standard grammatical rules. Test-takers will confront questions focusing on unseen passages, sentence correction, and critical reasoning.
Analytical Writing Assessment
Test-takers will have 30 minutes to write an essay. This section measures an MBA-candidate’s skills to develop an argument, think critically, and effectively communicate ideas.
